DVTK Stadium lighting control

With wiring already in place originally from a different system, the replacement with Loxone technology was the easy choice for the client behind this award-winning stadium in Hungary. What benefit led to this decision? The ability for Loxone to work as one complete system that could handle all lighting in all areas. Our Hungarian Loxone Partner Verdom Kft. presented the possibilities with Loxone with extensive functionality. After discussing his needs with the Partner, it was easy to realize how Loxone can take care of tasks needed for automation of the stadium, with benefits including:

András Schmidt started using Loxone in 2010. He started out as a one-man business but grew his business to build a team of 16 members. Verdom Kft. implements numerous projects with Loxone every year – from single-family homes to restaurants and, of course, football stadiums. As a long-standing Partner, he is always in contact with us, regularly attending training courses and sometimes even spending time at our headquarters to exchange ideas with the team.
Loxone is a solution that not only offers its own product range but also offers great expandability through its range of extensions. In a project as particular as the DVTK stadium, we needed a system that could connect a wide range of components. A range of very different lights can be controlled through one system – whether that’s floodlights or the lights in the changing rooms
Lighting for any event
The DVTK Stadium is suitable to host a variety of events: league matches, UEFA competition matches (such at the Europa League), televised matches, training, etc. All of these events require slightly different lighting.
“After I found out the lighting requirements, I knew that it would be easy with Loxone” – András Schmidt.
The floodlights are controlled by Loxone Relay Extensions. Using the Lighting Controller Function Block in Loxone Config, András configured predefined lighting moods. These can always be changed if needed the Loxone App.
Additionally, all of the lights in and around the outside of the stadium have been integrated into the system. Some are controlled directly through relays while others are controlled with the Loxone DALI Extension. Motion Sensors have been installed in areas such as, the locker rooms, corridors, bathrooms etc. to give the stadium human-centric lighting control. Touch Switches have also been installed around the stadium, in areas with manager access, to enable quick and easy operation of the lights.
By taking a glance at the stadium, visitors or passersby can know exactly what type of event is taking place due to predefined lighting moods set specifically for each event.
Heated drain pipes
On the roof of the stadium, the drainage pipes are heated to prevent them from freezing. Although this feature was not initially planned, they soon realized as the project was taking shape that ice was starting to form. To their. benefit, as Loxone is a very expandible ecosystem, adding this extra functionality was no issue.
The heated drain pipes were achieved simply by using a relay. As soon as there is a risk of ice, they’ll be automatically heated.
Temperature regulation in distribution cabinets
The distribution cabinets in the stadium are not located in one room, but rather spread out across the entire building. The owners of the stadium wanted a way to monitor the temperatures in all of the different cabinet locations and, if necessary, heat or cool the rooms to maintain a constant temperature.
The power supplies for the lighting system are located in each one of the distribution cabinets. When in use, these can become quite warm. However, they are also susceptible to freezing if the temperature drops too low. To counteract this, András and his team decided to implement temperature control for each cabinet.
A temperature sensor, a small fan and a heater have been installed to regulate cabinets. If the temperature in one of the cabinets falls below a set temperature, the heating is automatically switched on. If the temperature is too high, then the ventilation system will kick into action. The temperature is measured via analogue sensors and the heating and ventilation systems are controlled with relays.
Simple control in complex buildings
Operating and controlling a football stadium can bring certain challenges, most of which automation can overcome. However, due to the complex nature of a stadium, manual intervention is still needed at times. With the Loxone App and the Loxone Touches, the staff at the DVTK stadium always have a simple and intuitive way to do this.
Our tip: Loxone can control water pumps and valves as a smarter way to manage the watering of a sports field.
