Which one is the right choice depends on the specific circumstances.
On the one hand, it comes down to the on-site conditions: What does the cabling look like? What exactly needs to be measured?
On the other hand, there are standards, guidelines and laws to consider: How precisely must measurements be taken? What certifications are required?
One example is MID certification. This is an EU-wide standardized legal framework for billing based on measuring instruments.
Direct Measurement
When current flows through the measuring device, this is referred to as direct measurement. This refers to meters that are connected directly to the circuit or to the device. No additional sensors or current transformers are required.
Single-Phase Energy Meter Tree
The MID-certified Tree single-phase energy meter makes it easy to monitor the energy consumption of devices or groups of devices connected to a single circuit.
Application: Frequently used in private households or small offices to measure consumption in individual areas.
3-Phase Tree Energy Meter
The Tree 3-phase energy meter is MID-certified and measures power consumption across all three phases. This is particularly necessary in larger installations or commercial applications.

Indirect Measurement Using Current Transformers
With the help of current transformers and compatible meters, the current in an electrical conductor can be measured without interfering with the circuit. These devices are often used when measuring higher currents or when direct measurement on the circuit is not possible or practical.

Reading Measurement Data via Interfaces
“Reading” refers to the collection and transmission of data from various measuring devices or meters. The Miniserver features numerous interfaces for analyzing energy flows and data from a wide variety of sources.
M-Bus Extension
The M-Bus Extension makes it possible to integrate devices that communicate via the M-Bus protocol (e.g., older electricity meters) into LOXONE. It also allows you to read data from other meters, such as those for gas, water, or heat.
IR Counter Interface Air
The Air IR Meter Interface allows for the direct reading of compatible electronic household meters (eHZ) with an infrared interface. It can also read heat meters.
Modbus Extension, Air & Tree
These products enable the integration of devices with a Modbus RTU interface. Modbus RTU meters are used to measure electricity, water, gas, heat, or cooling.
P1 Meter Reader Air
The P1 Meter Reader Air is used to read DSMR P1 meters. These smart meters are primarily used in new buildings. Depending on the meter, they can also measure gas, water, or heat, for example.
Modbus TCP
The Miniserver features a Modbus TCP interface without the need for additional accessories. In addition, devices such as inverters, energy meters, or heat pumps can be integrated into the energy management system.

How can I monitor my home's electricity usage with LOXONE?
That depends on the electricity meter.
Many meters can be read using the IR Meter Interface Air. You can find a list of supported meters here.
Depending on the region, DSMR P1 meters are also used in newer buildings. If that’s the case for you, you can check here to see if your meter can be read using the P1 Meter Reader Air.
It’s best to ask your meter operator if and how you can read your meter.
Can my P1 Smart Meter be read using the P1 Meter Reader Air?
You can check that here. You can find the DSMR P1 version of your meter in the data sheet or, often, on the meter itself.
Can my smart meter be read via the Air IR meter interface?
You can find a list of supported meters here.
Can I measure the power consumption of household appliances?
Yes. With our smart plug, the Smart Socket Air, you can measure the energy consumption of individual devices and turn them on and off automatically or via the app.
How do I measure the power consumption of large appliances, such as a heat pump?
The electricity consumption of larger devices, such as heat pumps, industrial machinery, or a wallbox, can be measured using a dedicated meter or read via various interfaces. It’s best to ask the manufacturer or the technician who commissioned the device which method makes the most sense.
I have an old electricity meter. Can I integrate it into LOXONE?
In many cases, even older electricity meters can be integrated into LOXONE. This can be done, for example, using the Air IR meter interface. You can find a list of supported meters here.
If the existing meter cannot be integrated, the metering system can be retrofitted using current transformers and a compatible meter without any modifications to the wiring.
