What LOXONE Can Do as an HEMS

LOXONE HEMS: The Hardware and Software for More Self-Consumption and Lower Electricity Costs

Everything Is Connected

At LOXONE, energy management is not an isolated feature – it’s part of an overall system. The heat pump knows the expected PV generation for the next few hours and can adapt to it. The shading lowers when it gets warm, reducing the cooling demand at the same time. The light switches off when nobody is in the room. Everything is connected.

FAQs

What is an HEMS and do I really need one?

A home energy management system is the control center that directs your self-generated power to where it’s most useful at any given moment – automatically, without you having to intervene every day.

Is it worth it? A reference project from Austria shows: a single-family home that was renovated and equipped with a brine heat pump, 16 kWp PV and a LOXONE Miniserver saves around €6,000 per year. And if you add a battery, you can consume up to 70% of your self-generated power yourself – instead of selling it for a low feed-in tariff.

What should I look for when choosing an HEMS?
Not every HEMS is the same. These criteria will help you decide:

Manufacturer independence – Does the system work with the devices you have or are planning? Or are you tied to a single brand? A manufacturer-independent HEMS like LOXONE integrates inverters, batteries, Wallbox and heat pump from different suppliers at the same time.

Local control – Does the system run locally or does it depend on the cloud? Your house should keep optimizing even if the cloud goes down or there’s an internet problem.

Open protocols – Does the system support common standards such as Modbus, OCPP or EEBUS? This determines which devices can be integrated today and in the future.

Heat pump integration – Can the HEMS really control the heat pump intelligently – optimizing cycling, preloading the buffer tank with foresight, responding to PV surplus? Or can it only switch it on and off?

Connected building intelligence – Can the system think beyond energy? Controlling shading, heating, lighting and security together multiplies the benefit – and is something specialized HEMS solutions can’t do.

I already have an energy app from my electricity provider – do I still need an HEMS?

Yes, because an app only shows you what’s happening. LOXONE takes action. When the sun shines, the Wallbox charges. When the electricity price drops, the heat pump kicks in. When the battery is full, the car stops charging. All automatic – you don’t have to do a thing.

Is LOXONE energy management worth it even without a PV system?
Yes. If you use a dynamic electricity tariff such as Tibber, you can save even without PV: LOXONE runs the heat pump when electricity is cheap – and charges the electric car automatically during the cheapest hours. According to an analysis by Boston Consulting Group (2025), annual savings of €350–450 through dynamic tariff optimization are already achievable today – for a single-family home with a battery, heat pump and electric car (average consumption: 17,000 kWh/year). If you add a PV system later, the system is already prepared. You don’t need to set anything up again.
Do I need a battery for LOXONE energy management?

No, LOXONE also works without a battery and already optimizes the self-consumption of your PV system. The Wallbox, heat pump and household appliances are switched on automatically when the sun is shining.

With a battery, however, you get much more out of it: you can consume up to 70% of your self-generated power yourself instead of feeding it into the grid for a low feed-in tariff. The battery charges during the day and releases the energy in the evening, when you really need it. Find out how a battery can help you cut electricity costs.

What are the running costs of LOXONE energy management?
There are no license costs or subscription fees for LOXONE energy management. Many energy management solutions charge ongoing fees for their optimization functions. With LOXONE, you pay once for the installation. What the system does after that costs you nothing.
Does it still work if the internet goes down?
Yes. All core functions – PV surplus charging, battery logic, heat pump control – run locally on the Miniserver. No internet, no problem. Remote access and spot price data need a connection, but your house keeps running.
Which devices does LOXONE work with?

LOXONE works with most systems on the market: inverters from Fronius, SMA, Kostal and Huawei, heat pumps via Modbus or network, Wallboxes via OCPP, batteries via Modbus, air conditioners from Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG, Fujitsu and others. You can find the complete, up-to-date compatibility list in the LOXONE Library.

What makes LOXONE different from specialized HEMS such as evcc, Solar Manager or 1KOMMA5°?
Specialized HEMS solutions such as evcc or Solar Manager focus on energy optimization. Providers like 1KOMMA5° also remain an HEMS at their core, despite their own hardware for PV, batteries and heat pumps. The difference: LOXONE controls the entire building at the same time. Heat pump, shading, lighting, security, heating – all in one system, all perfectly coordinated.

Example: when the sun is shining, the shading lowers automatically – reducing the cooling demand. At the same time, the battery charges. At the same time, the heat pump heats the buffer tank. No specialized HEMS can link these levels together – because it only knows energy, not the whole house.

Is an HEMS complicated to install? And who does it?

LOXONE is installed by certified partners – electricians and planners who know the system and set it up correctly. That’s not a drawback but a guarantee of quality: you get a system that is professionally planned and maintained for the long term.

You don’t have to do anything yourself for the setup. After that, everything runs automatically – but you can step in at any time in the LOXONE App: adjust priorities, change settings, view energy flows. As much control as you want, as little effort as possible.

How much can I really save with energy management – what are realistic expectations?

That depends on the starting point. With a complete renovation, high savings of around 80% of energy costs are possible.

You can also save without renovating: according to Boston Consulting Group (2025), a single-family home with a battery, heat pump, electric car and dynamic tariff optimization saves around 20–30% of its electricity costs.

What is a smart meter and do I need one for LOXONE energy management?
A smart meter is a digital electricity meter that measures your consumption in real time and transmits this data electronically – unlike an analog meter, which is only read once a year.

You don’t need a smart meter for many LOXONE functions. PV surplus charging, heat pump control, load management and the visualization of energy flows in the App also work without one – LOXONE measures the relevant values directly via its own energy meters in the house.

A smart meter becomes a requirement as soon as you want to use dynamic electricity tariffs. Tariffs such as Tibber or Awattar bill hourly based on the current wholesale electricity price – for this, the meter has to send consumption data to the energy supplier every 15 minutes, which only a smart meter can do. No smart meter, no dynamic tariff; no dynamic tariff, no spot price optimization by LOXONE.

In short: LOXONE already works without a smart meter today – and is ready to use its full potential as soon as one is installed.

What is § 14a EnWG – and what do I need to do?
Since 2024, grid operators in Germany have been allowed to briefly throttle controllable devices – Wallboxes, heat pumps, air conditioners from 4.2 kW – in the event of overload. In return, grid fees are reduced.

You don’t have to do anything. LOXONE receives the signal automatically and regulates accordingly – while making sure other consumers compensate where possible.

What is spot price optimization – and what's in it for me?
Electricity doesn’t have a fixed price – it fluctuates hourly depending on supply and demand on the power exchange. If you use a dynamic tariff such as Tibber or Awattar, you pay little during cheap hours and more during expensive ones.

The LOXONE Spot Price Optimizer makes use of exactly that: it automatically loads the current exchange prices and shifts consumers to the cheapest hours.

Does energy management also make sense in a rented or owner-occupied apartment?
Yes, to a different extent depending on the situation. If you use a dynamic electricity tariff, you can use the LOXONE Smart Socket to automatically shift household appliances such as the washing machine or dishwasher to the cheapest hours – saving costs without having to think about it.

A balcony solar system adds another level: LOXONE detects your own solar surplus and controls consumers automatically based on it, instead of only reacting to the electricity tariff. This way, you can reach around 30–40% self-consumption even without a large rooftop system.
