Energy optimization

Challenge

The project involved installing a new Loxone-based energy management system and integrating it into an existing building's energy system. The particular challenge was to control a PV system and battery storage system in such a way that they could operate economically during the winter months – even with low PV output. By incorporating a dynamic electricity tariff, the battery storage system would not only store PV surpluses but also be charged from the grid at times of low spot market prices. The challenge lay in intelligently linking consumption forecasts, dynamic price queries, and control via the Loxone Spot Optimizer to achieve maximum economic efficiency and self-sufficiency.

Solution

To meet this challenge, Loxone's new energy management system was equipped with the Spot Optimizer module. This enables dynamic control of the battery storage system based on current spot market electricity prices. Using a freely configurable price difference, the system identifies favorable time windows for charging the storage system with grid power. During periods of high electricity prices, the previously stored energy is used specifically to maximize self-consumption and reduce costs. This intelligent control enabled flexible and economical use of the battery storage system – especially during the winter months when PV yields are low.

The use of the Loxone Miniserver was a conscious decision for this project, as the system's high expandability and customizability perfectly matched our requirements. The Miniserver allows us to flexibly design the energy management system and adapt it to future needs and changes. The easy integration of additional components and the system's adaptability offer a long-term solution that also easily accommodates future expansions.
