How to set up your Dimmer Extension

Information on LED dimming

230V LED dimming of lights / strips

With the Loxone Dimmer you can dim common 230V LED lights and strips.

12 - 24V LED dimming of lights / strips

LED lights and strips from 12V to 24V can be dimmed with the Loxone PWM Dimmer.

Tested LEDs

You can dim all 230V LED bulbs marked as dimmable with the Loxone Dimmer. Due to the electronic control LED bulbs require different correction values on the Dimmer to allow for smooth dimming. This list should help you find suitable LED bulbs and their correction values.

Correction Necessary?


  • Mount the Dimmer Extension on the DIN rail
  • Connect 24V DC power supply, but do not switch on until the whole installation is completed
    (We recommend looping through the Miniserver)
  • Connect the inputs and outputs
    (We recommend splitting the channels of the dimmer across 3 phases)
  • Connect the Loxone Link
  • Note: If it's the last extension, terminate the Loxone Link with a 120Ω resistor (included with the Miniserver)
  • Turn on the power supply
  • After a few seconds, the left LED will flash green if the extension is already configured, or orange if not

Important Information

  • Inductive loads (e.g. conventional transformers) and capacitive loads (e.g. electronic transformers) must not be interconnected!
  • Conventional transformers must be loaded with at least 80% of the nominal load with lamps.
  • The Dimmer Extension is not suitable for speed control of motors, since back EMF with voltage spikes of over 300 V causes permanent damage. If you have any questions regarding this please contact Support.
  • When using the Dimmer for mains LEDs each channel should be de-rated by 50% due to the high inrush currents. This means that the first channel would be rated at 200 Watts and the other channels at 105 Watts.

Make sure that your bulbs are labelled as dimmable - especially with energy saving bulbs and LEDs.

Configuring Extensions

Extensions are connected to the Miniserver with Loxone Link

To add one or more extensions to the program the simplest way is to connect up the extensions to the Miniserver using the Loxone Link and looping power. Then do a search in Loxone Config, which will bring up the Miniserver and all the connected extensions. You can highlight a single extension, give it a name and then click Create device which will add in the highlighted extension. Or you can click on Create all devices which will add all the connected extensions in to the program with the correct serial numbers.

Extensions are not connected to the Miniserver

If there is no physical extensions connected to the Miniserver they cannot be found in the search. However you can add the extensions to the program so you can configure a system before installing. In the configuration software, connect to your Miniserver and download the existing configuration (if there is one) from the Miniserver. Select the 'Devices' drop-down menu on the Periphery tab and select the required extension, then fill in the serial number in the properties.

Entering a serial number

If you are manually adding devices before the Miniserver install has been done, or if an extension has been replaced you need to add the serial number in the properties. Click on the extension in the periphery tree. Enter the serial number of the extension in the properties section.

The serial number is on the back of your extension. You can find the number just below the barcode (see picture).

Save the configuration in the Minisever

After entering your extension's serial number, click on the Miniserver tab and select 'Save in Miniserver'. The controller reboots and after about 10 seconds, both status LEDs on the extension will turn green.

Identify device

If you have installed several extensions of the same type and cannot identify which one is which (for example 2 DMX extensions) then you can use the software to identify a device. Simply click on the device in the periphery tree and the extension will flash red, green and yellow very quickly so you can identify it.

Using the Dimmer extension

The Loxone Dimmer Extension is an RLC Dimmer. That means you can dim resistive, inductive and capacitive loads.

When the left status LED on the Dimmer extension is red the measurement of the frequency of the dimming channels is being performed.

Dimming types

You can change what type of load is being dimmed.

If an incoming value is outside the range (0 to 10) for instance 0-100% with 0-10VDC, this can be adjusted for using the corrector.

Correction example for a dimmer

The analogue output from the dimmer function block gives out a 0-10V signal, the output of the Dimmer Extension is 0-100%, so the corrector must be used for the scaling to be correct. The scaling is linear. If 1V at the analogue output corresponds to 10%, then the following settings must be used:

Since high voltage LEDs have their own electronics, it might be that at 70%, they are already at their full brightness. The corrector can also be used here:

In the section 'Display', you can choose the desired units. It can be useful to read the help window, as shown in the screenshot.

If you want a status display of the output, then tick the box next to 'Show status only'.
