Photovoltaic: Making the Most of Solar Energy
More self-consumption, lower costs with smart energy management.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Solar Power System
LOXONE measures generation and consumption, proactively determines the most cost-effective option – using, storing, or feeding power back into the grid – and uses this information to control your appliances, from your heat pump to your electric car.
Solar Power System with Energy Management: The Benefits
Your investment will pay off faster
Large appliances run automatically whenever there is enough solar power generated by your system. This helps you lower your electricity costs and get more out of your system.
Surplus is put to good use
Instead of flowing inefficiently into the grid, your excess power automatically goes where you need it – to devices and storage – based on your priorities and the PV production forecast.
No overload, no costly spikes
If several high-power devices are running at the same time, LOXONE automatically regulates the load. At home, this prevents overloads; in a business setting, it prevents costly spikes in power consumption.
Your electric car charges automatically using solar power
The LOXONE Wallbox charges using your excess solar power or low-cost electricity from your dynamic electricity plan. This lets you drive more affordably and get the most out of your solar system.
Everything at a Glance
In the app, you can view generation, consumption, and storage in real time and set your own priorities. You’ll be notified immediately in the event of any deviations or technical issues – which enhances safety and reliability.
What You Need
PV energy management works with your existing system as well. The Miniserver integrates common inverters, storage systems, and devices – all it takes is a few LOXONE components and setup by a certified LOXONE partner.
Miniserver
The control center for your entire building: from lighting and shading to energy management.
Energy Meters & Software Meter Modules
Track all energy flows in real time – the foundation of any control system.
Wallbox
Charge your electric car using your excess solar power or low-cost electricity from your dynamic electricity plan.
Modbus Extension (optional)
Required only for devices connected via Modbus RTU. The Miniserver can already communicate directly with many inverters and meters via Modbus TCP.
Retrofitting for E-Mobility
Everything you need to charge your electric car: from the control system to the wallbox – wirelessly retrofitted, with no modifications required.
An Open System for Your Solar Power Equipment.
Inverters and battery storage systems from popular manufacturers such as Fronius, SMA, Kostal, and Huawei can be easily integrated. You can find the complete, up-to-date list in the LOXONE Library.
FAQs
What is an energy management system for photovoltaic systems?
An energy management system for photovoltaics is a control system that automatically directs the solar power generated on-site to where it is used most effectively—rather than feeding it unused into the grid. It continuously measures how much electricity is being generated and consumed, and activates appliances such as heat pumps, hot water systems, or wallboxes precisely when solar power is available. This increases self-consumption and reduces electricity costs.
Photovoltaics is just one part of the solution: LOXONE manages energy throughout the entire building and integrates it with the overall building automation system.
Will this work with my existing solar power system?
Yes, it can be retrofitted without any problems. You can even integrate an existing PV system – so you don’t have to plan for LOXONE from the start. The Miniserver and the necessary components are added later, and your system continues to run during the process. A certified LOXONE partner will check in advance whether your inverter supports a compatible protocol and will set everything up.
Which inverters is LOXONE compatible with?
Compatible with most common models. Some, such as those from Fronius, are directly supported, while many others—including SMA, Kostal, Huawei, and SolarEdge—can be integrated via the open Modbus standard. You can check the LOXONE Library. to see if your model is included and how to connect it.
Can I charge my electric car using my solar power system?
Yes, with the LOXONE Wallbox, you can charge your electric car specifically using your surplus solar power (starting at just 1.38 kW) or with low-cost electricity from your dynamic electricity plan. Based on your presets, LOXONE automatically determines whether it makes more sense to use the solar power for your car, other appliances, or the storage system.
Is it worth managing solar power even without battery storage?
Yes, even without a storage system, you’ll use more of your solar power because the heat pump, hot water system, or wallbox automatically run when the sun is shining. Without a storage system, however, you can only use the electricity you need at that moment – the rest goes into the grid. A storage system fills exactly this gap: It stores the excess until you need it.
Is a solar control system worth it even in winter?
Yes, even if the output is lower. A solar power system still provides a significant portion of its annual output in the winter, and LOXONE makes targeted use of every kilowatt-hour specifically for heating and hot water during that time. Learn more: Solar Power in Winter.
How does LOXONE know the weather forecast?
About the LOXONE Weather Service and the PV Production Forecast: The Weather Service delivers location-specific forecast data for up to 66 hours in advance directly to your Miniserver. Based on this data, the PV Production Forecast calculates how much electricity your system is expected to generate over the next 72 hours. This way, the system knows when it’s worth storing energy or using it directly. For this, the Miniserver needs an internet connection.
