What is a capacity charge – and why does a peak load cost so much?
Larger businesses pay two components for grid usage: an energy charge based on the number of kilowatt-hours consumed and a capacity charge based on the highest measured power demand in kilowatts. This peak 15-minute interval determines the capacity charge for an extended billing period. Thus, it is not the consumption itself that becomes more expensive; rather, a single peak sets a price that remains in effect for a long time.
Do I need special measurement technology for that?
The foundation is the reliable recording of energy flows. LOXONE offers several methods for this: direct measurement via Energy Meters, indirect measurement via Current Transformers, and reading data from existing meters via interfaces.
Can energy management also be retrofitted into existing buildings?
Yes. You can integrate existing equipment and retrofit energy management using Air products (wireless) and meter interfaces – without having to break open walls or rewire. Here is an example Hotel project.
