Photovoltaics: Making the most of solar energy
More self-consumption, lower costs with smart energy management.
How to get the most out of your solar panels
LOXONE measures generation and consumption, proactively determines what is most cost-effective at any given moment – using, storing or feeding into the grid – and, based on this, controls your appliances, from the heat pump to your electric car.
Solar PV system with energy management: the benefits
Your investment will pay off faster
Large appliances run automatically whenever there is enough solar power generated by your own system. This helps you reduce your electricity bills and get more out of your system.
Surplus is put to good use
Instead of being wasted into the grid, your surplus is automatically channelled to where you need it – to appliances and storage units, according to your priorities and the PV Production Forecast.
No overload, no costly spikes
If several high-power appliances are running at the same time, LOXONE automatically regulates the load. At home, this protects against overloads; in a business setting, it prevents costly spikes in energy consumption.
Your electric car charges automatically using solar power
The LOXONE Wallbox charges using your surplus solar power or low-cost electricity from your dynamic electricity tariff. This means you can drive more cheaply and make the most of your solar panel system.
Everything at a glance
In the app, you can view generation, consumption and storage in real time and set your own priorities. You’ll be notified immediately in the event of any deviations or technical issues – this enhances security and reliability.
What you’ll need
PV energy management also works with your existing system. The Miniserver integrates standard inverters, storage systems and devices – all you need are a few LOXONE components that are setup by a certified LOXONE Partner.
Miniserver
The control centre for your entire building: from lighting and shading to energy management.
Energy Meters & Software Meter Modules
They monitor all energy flows in real time – the basis for any control system.
Wallbox
Charges your electric car using your surplus solar power or cheap electricity from your dynamic electricity tariff.
Modbus Extension (optional)
Only required for devices connected via Modbus RTU. The Miniserver can already communicate directly with many inverters and meters via Modbus TCP.
Retrofitting for EV mobility
Everything you need to charge your electric car: from the control unit to the wallbox – retrofitted wirelessly, with no modifications required.
An open system for your solar PV equipment.
Inverters and battery storage systems from popular manufacturers such as Fronius, SMA, Kostal and Huawei can be easily integrated. You can find the full, up-to-date list in the LOXONE Library.
FAQs
What is an energy management system for photovoltaic systems?
An energy management system for photovoltaic installations is a control system that automatically directs the solar power you generate to where it is used most effectively – rather than feeding it unused into the grid. It continuously measures how much electricity is being generated and consumed, and switches on appliances such as heat pumps, hot water systems or wall boxes precisely when solar power is available. This increases self-consumption and reduces electricity costs.
Photovoltaics is only one part of it: LOXONE manages energy consumption throughout the building and integrates it with the building’s overall automation system.
Will this work with my existing solar panel system?
Yes, it can easily be retrofitted. You can also integrate an existing PV system – so you don’t need to have planned for LOXONE from the outset. The Miniserver and the necessary components are added at a later stage, whilst your system continues to run. A certified LOXONE Partner will check in advance whether your inverter supports a compatible protocol and will set everything up for you.
Which inverters is LOXONE compatible with?
With most common models. Some, such as those from Fronius, are directly supported, whilst many others – such as SMA, Kostal, Huawei and SolarEdge – can be integrated via the open Modbus standard. You can check whether your model is included and how to connect it in the LOXONE Library.
Can I charge my electric car using my solar panel system?
Yes, with the LOXONE Wallbox, you can charge your electric car specifically using your surplus solar power (from as little as 1.38 kW) or with low-cost electricity from your dynamic electricity tariff. Based on your presets, LOXONE automatically decides whether it makes more sense to use the solar power for your car, other appliances or the storage unit.
Is it worth managing solar power even without battery storage?
Yes, even without a storage system, you’ll make better use of your solar power, because the heat pump, hot water system or wallbox will run automatically whenever the sun is shining. Without a storage system, however, you can only use the electricity you need at that moment – the rest is fed into the grid. A storage system fills precisely this gap: it stores the surplus until you need it.
Is a solar control system worth it even in winter?
Yes, even if the yield is lower. A solar PV system still provides a significant proportion of the annual yield in winter, and LOXONE makes targeted use of every kilowatt-hour specifically for heating and hot water at precisely that time of year.
How does LOXONE know the weather forecast?
About LOXONE Weather Service and the PV Production Forecast: The weather service provides location-specific forecast data for up to 66 hours in advance, sent directly to your Miniserver. Based on this, the PV production forecast calculates how much electricity your system is expected to generate over the next 72 hours. This tells the system when it is worth storing energy or using it straight away. For this to work, the Miniserver needs an internet connection.
