What is intelligent energy management?

Smart energy management automatically coordinates the generation, storage and consumption of energy. Photovoltaic systems, battery storage, e-mobility and electrical appliances are coordinated in such a way that energy is used efficiently and electricity costs are reduced.

A modern energy management system, or EMS or HEMS (Home Energy Management System) for short, monitors all energy flows in the building in real time. It automatically decides when surplus PV energy should be consumed directly, charged into the battery storage, or used to charge the electric car. By integrating dynamic electricity rates, the system can specifically draw power from the grid when the market price of electricity is particularly low.

Energy monitoring is the foundation of this: Only by transparently tracking your consumption can you optimise it effectively. LOXONE connects all energy sources and consumers in a single central system – without separate apps or isolated solutions.

What is a home energy management system and do I need one?

HEMS stands for Home Energy Management System – a system that intelligently coordinates energy generation (e.g., solar panels) and consumption (heat pumps, wallboxes, household appliances). If you use LOXONE, you already have a fully-fledged energy management system in place: the HEMS feature is natively integrated.

What devices can LOXONE control as a HEMS?

LOXONE directly integrates inverters, battery storage systems, heat pumps, wallboxes, buffer tanks and smart meters – and fully automatically optimises their interaction as an energy management system for residential or commercial buildings.

How does LOXONE differ from a separate energy management system?

Separate HEMS devices only control energy flow – without any connection to lighting, shading, or indoor climate. LOXONE takes it a step further: The energy management system is an integral part of the overall building automation system. For example, it can automatically adjust the shading to reduce cooling requirements.

How can I measure energy consumption with LOXONE?

LOXONE offers three measurement methods: direct measurement, indirect measurement via current transformers and reading measurement values via interfaces.

What energy management features does LOXONE offer?

The Miniserver controls the intelligent distribution of energy based on production, demand and priority. The goal is always to increase self-consumption without overloading the grid.

  • Standby Killer
The smart building automatically disconnects all standby devices and other power consumers from the grid when they are not needed or when no one is present.
  • Energy Statistics
Analyse statistical data that you can view at any time in the LOXONE App, even remotely. This helps you identify energy-saving potential.
  • Energy Manager
At LOXONE, we have a function block called ‘Energy Manager’. Without getting too technical, this means that the energy currently being generated is used optimally. Thanks to this function block, various devices with different priorities can be controlled. Specifically, this means that certain devices are automatically turned on when more electricity is being produced than consumed. A good example is charging an electric car. The electricity generated at that moment isn’t wasted but is used right then to charge the car. Or use that energy for the water heater so that everything is ready in the evening when you need hot water.
  • Load Manager
When multiple electrical loads are in use simultaneously, the capacity of the service connection can quickly be exhausted. That is why it is important to determine the current power demand of the loads in the building and to take action if the service connection is at risk of becoming overloaded.
Can LOXONE automatically use dynamic electricity prices?

Yes. LOXONE knows when electricity rates are low – and turns on your devices or charges the battery during those hours. You set it up once and then everything runs in the background without you having to do anything every day.

How can I save energy on hot water with LOXONE?

You can easily set a schedule for your hot water so that it’s always available when you need it – without wasting energy.

What interface options does LOXONE offer for energy management?

LOXONE supports various interfaces for integrating energy measurement data from a wide range of sources into the system:

  • The LOXONE Miniserver supports Modbus TCP over Ethernet – without any additional accessories. This allows inverters, energy meters, and heat pumps to be integrated directly.
  • Modbus RTU – Devices with a Modbus RTU interface, such as meters for electricity, water, gas, heating, or cooling, can be connected via the Modbus Extension or Modbus Air.
Infrared (IR) – The IR Meter Interface Air reads compatible electronic household meters (eHZ) with an infrared interface – including heat meters.
  • M-Bus – The M-Bus Extension enables the integration of devices with the M-Bus protocol, such as older electricity meters or meters for gas, water, and heat.
  • DSMR P1 – The P1 Meter Reader Air reads modern smart meters that support DSMR P1 and, depending on the meter model, can also record gas, water, or heat consumption.
  • MQTT – Using the MQTT protocol, devices and systems that support the MQTT protocol can be directly integrated into LOXONE Energy Management.
  • Virtual Inputs and Outputs – Virtual inputs and outputs allow data from third-party devices or external systems to be flexibly integrated into Loxone and processed further.
