Snowdonia Smart Barn

Challenge

Keeping the Barn looking like a Barn. This project had 3 planning authorities holding a vested interest in the outcome: Snowdonia National Park were the lead with controlling input from the National Trust (previous owners) and CADW who oversee the historic buildings in Wales. Every part was designed around the feel and the need to maximise on ecological and energy saving products. The technology had to blend in seamlessly...

Solution

As the client also wanted to retain the Barn feel at the heart of the project. John Cullen were tasked to design a lighting plan, we were brought in early to confirm the control aspect for the lighting and to add other control features within the property, including some ingenious space saving features.

The barn retained its internal frame features that were highlighted by great layered lighting lighting along with some of the bare stonework. The lounge space has 21 DALI lighting elements including direct and indirect spots, LED tape, feature/artwork spots and table lamps.

The main space has 4 distinct areas that are controlled together via Touch Pure switches, the kitchen and mezzanine can override the local lighting scene that can also automatically revert back to the global scene depending on what has been selected.

Skylight windows are also controlled by Loxone providing operation and safety interlocks for the shading, rain and wind. The windows cant open with the blinds down and are subsequently locked whilst the window is open. Given the nature of the windows, they are independently interlocked/closed based on wind speed and direction.

The National Trust also insisted on light pollution control for the external lighting, and this has been achieved automatically through gradual dimming lights shortly after dusk.

Other features include internal alarm system, multi-room audio, gate integration and heating control & monitoring.

Loxone has exceeded my expectations in terms of control. John Cullen have never had so much control over their design, and its the control and skill shown by Graeme that has made this project such a success. Working away, the monitoring aspect provides great peace of mind. Ive achieved everything and more with balancing aesthetics and control to provide me with an amazing home in the mountains...
