Challenge

We find a school that has a boiler room with 3 boilers installed in a cascade. There is no control system, so the boilers work 24 hours to heat the entire building at a constant temperature. There are rooms where it is very hot and others where it is cold. Comfort is not adequate and energy consumption is very high.

The objective is to improve the thermal comfort of teachers and students and at the same time improve the energy efficiency of the building. You want to define different temperatures for rooms and different operating hours.

Solution

We have installed a Loxone system with 5 wireless temperature sensors, one for each heating circuit. Additionally, we have installed immersion probes (1-wire) in the hydraulic circuits, in order to control the return temperatures of each circuit. Using this information, the system activates the pumping equipment in each room only when necessary. Thanks to the Modbus gateway we can communicate with the 3 existing boilers and be able to monitor their operation.

We have defined different profiles so that the center can give access to the system to center staff and maintenance personnel. In this way, the system is controlled exclusively by the personnel that the center has decided. Students and teachers may not manipulate temperatures without the authorization of trained personnel.

The Loxone system has drastically improved the thermal comfort of the school. In addition, maintenance personnel do not have to be constantly aware of the operation of the boilers to raise or lower set temperatures. The system works in automatic mode and the energy efficiency of the system is greatly improved.
