Challenge
Xchanger’s innovative dairy parlour cooling systems provide an energy-efficient way to repurpose waste heat, but early installations lacked key functionality. Remote monitoring and control were limited, leaving farmers and Xchanger’s management team without the ability to diagnose faults or optimise system performance from a distance. With installations spread across the UK, from Pembrokeshire to Edinburgh, a smarter, more connected solution was needed to reduce maintenance time, improve efficiency, and enhance data tracking.
Additionally, Xchanger wanted to monitor both electrical consumption and heat energy production in real time. This data is critical for optimising system performance and for farmers claiming incentives like the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). However, without an integrated monitoring system, tracking this information was cumbersome and inconsistent.

Solution
CES turned to Loxone to bring intelligent automation, remote monitoring, and advanced data tracking to Xchanger systems. By integrating Loxone Miniservers, they provided seamless remote access, enabling engineers to diagnose faults instantly, reducing costly site visits. Alarm notifications - previously limited to a local beacon -were enhanced with push notifications and email alerts via Loxone, distinguishing between soft (self-resetting) and hard (manual-reset) alarms for more precise fault analysis.
To improve energy monitoring, CES utilised comms-ready consumption meters, allowing Loxone to track power usage and heat production in real-time. This data is now available instantly via the Loxone App, providing Xchanger’s team with the insights they need to optimise system efficiency and simplify RHI claims.
Loxone now manages heating and cooling circuits, automating processes such as heat dumping and pump control based on site-specific requirements. With Loxone’s extensive range of relays and inputs, most configurations are met with ease, and farm owners can even control heating settings remotely via user-specific applications - helping them prepare parlours on frosty mornings or adjust underfloor heating with a tap on their smartphone.
Looking ahead, CES is working to further enhance Xchanger’s capabilities by integrating Modbus communication via Loxone. This will allow direct access to heat pumps for real-time diagnostics, detailed system monitoring, and even more precise consumption tracking - ensuring Xchanger continues to lead the way in smart, sustainable dairy farming.
