Challenge
The house underwent a complete renovation, and its original technologies no longer met the requirements for modern and energy-efficient living. The electrical wiring, heating system, lighting, and security were not prepared for centralized control, and the individual technologies operated separately without mutual communication. During the renovation planning, a clear need emerged to unify all systems into one logical and reliable whole, capable of autonomous operation while delivering greater comfort and efficiency to the users.
At the same time, it was necessary to respect the technical and structural limitations of the building itself. The house layout did not allow the installation of external blinds, which significantly influenced the shading control design. The original entrance doors were historic, so major interventions were undesirable - which affected the choice of the security element and smart lock. The heating system also had to be designed with respect to the existing gas condensing boiler while being prepared for a future transition to a heat pump.
Another aspect was the integration of the newly installed solar power plant. The goal was not only to monitor production and consumption but also to intelligently manage energy surpluses, optimize the operation of energy-intensive devices, and maximize the use of self-generated energy. Without centralized control, however, it would not have been possible to achieve interconnection between photovoltaics, water heating, battery charging, and household consumption.
The project brief was therefore to create a smart solution that connects all technologies - heating, lighting, shading, security, access control, and energy management - under one Loxone system. The objective was to achieve a high level of automation, clear control, reduced energy consumption, while preserving the aesthetics and specific character of the renovated house.
At the same time, it was necessary to respect the technical and structural limitations of the building itself. The objective was to achieve a high level of automation, clear control, reduced energy consumption, while preserving the aesthetics and specific character of the renovated house.
Solution
Based on the renovation requirements and the need to unify all technologies into one system, we designed a comprehensive Loxone integration as the central platform of the entire home. Here, Loxone manages energy, lighting, heating, shading, security, and access, enabling convenient user control both locally and remotely via the mobile app.
A key part of the solution was the integration of the solar power plant with the Growatt MID inverter, connected to Loxone via Modbus communication. Thanks to this, the system has real-time insight into production, consumption, and battery status and can autonomously control water heating, the operation of energy-intensive appliances, and battery storage charging according to the current situation and spot prices. The use of photovoltaic energy is therefore maximally efficient and fully automated.
The lighting was designed using modern LED luminaires in RGBW and warm white variants, complemented by gold-finish design elements. Presence Sensors regulate lighting based on movement and daylight intensity. The Loxone Touch Air and Touch Pure Classic Air buttons serve not only to control lighting scenes but also - thanks to integrated temperature and humidity sensors - as inputs for zone-based temperature control.
Due to the layout limitations of the house, external blinds could not be installed, so electric Roman blinds were selected. Loxone controls them automatically based on solar radiation, time of day, or user preferences, ensuring thermal comfort and protection against interior overheating.
The heating system is based on a gas condensing boiler with preparation for a future transition to a heat pump. Loxone provides zone control via Giacomini thermoelectric actuators on the underfloor heating manifold as well as on the radiators, all controlled directly by the Miniserver. This enables precise temperature control in every room and ensures maximum efficiency and comfort.
The solution also includes secure access via the NFC Code Touch panel and the Nuki Smart Lock Pro, enabling modern control without intervention in the historic doors. The doorbell button is integrated into the panel, and the sound is played via the Sonos system connected to Loxone. Presence Sensors and Door & Window Contacts complement the security setup.
A wall-mounted iPad with the Loxone App serves as the central control interface, providing an overview of the entire house status, diagnostics, and consumption statistics. The display automatically goes to sleep based on presence and time of day, contributing to discreet yet always accessible control.

I chose Loxone not only because of its wide automation capabilities but also thanks to its robust industrial-grade solution and stable software. I also appreciate the free web gateway for the Miniserver, which enables secure remote access and opens possibilities for future communication between Miniservers, for example for sharing electrical energy between buildings.
