Fire department – smart & safe

Challenge

A volunteer fire department faces unique challenges: vehicles must be ready for deployment at all times, alarm and notification systems must function reliably – and all this within a building that must remain operational around the clock. Simultaneously, energy consumption should be optimized without compromising operational readiness. Added to this was the desire for modern, user-friendly lighting controls in the command center and training room, as well as a central overview of the status of all critical systems.

Solution

At the heart of the installation is the LOXONE Miniserver, which is directly connected to the control center's Groupalarm alerting system via a custom-developed interface. Data privacy was a primary consideration: the Miniserver receives only the type of incident – the location and other details remain within the alerting system. When an alarm is received, the entire building reacts immediately: the lights switch on automatically, the heating switches to energy-saving mode, and an alarm monitor is automatically activated in the vehicle bay. This monitor shows the group leader in real time which firefighters are already en route – allowing them to see at a glance, for example, whether additional firefighters with breathing apparatus are still arriving.

A key element is the battery maintenance monitoring of the emergency vehicles. The Miniserver continuously monitors whether all vehicles are properly connected to the charging system. In case of a deviation, the fire chief and equipment manager automatically receive a notification directly via the LOXONE app – ensuring that no vehicle goes unnoticed without sufficient battery charge. The current charge status of all vehicles can also be viewed at any time on the Touch Pure Flex in the control center.

The lighting control system in the headquarters and training room has been completely converted to DALI and LOXONE RGBW Spot Tree. It is operated via Touch Pure Flex Panels, which allow for intuitive and flexible control. In the changing rooms, Loxone handles the simple on/off control of the lighting.

For building safety, the Jablotron system is integrated via RS485: If a smoke detector is triggered in the fire station or a vehicle, the Miniserver automatically alerts the firefighters via Groupalarm – reliably and in real time, without manual intervention.

LOXONE has made our fire department significantly smarter. From battery charging to vehicle monitoring – many things that were previously manual or not monitored at all now run automatically and reliably. We were particularly pleased that both our Jablotron system and Groupalarm were seamlessly integrated into the system.
