You can use LED spotlights as a versatile light source in every room of your home. When starting to plan the lighting, no doubt you’ll have lot of questions. So where to start? We’ve got the answer. In this blog, you’ll pick up effective tips for planning your perfect lighting with LED spotlights.

Which kind of LED spotlights should I use?

For each room and area in your home there are different requirements for lighting. Depending on the activities and tasks taking place in that area, you’ll need to carefully consider the type of lighting best suited to the space. The good news is that there are just two kind of LED spotlights that can be used throughout the whole house:

LED spotlight for warm white lighting

We offer our own Warm White Loxone LED Spots for everyday living.

LED spotlight for coloured lighting

For colorful lighting we’ve developed our own Loxone RGBW LED Spots.

Where should I use which spotlight?

There are two rules to keep in mind:

1. Wherever you need a lot of light, e.g. for working in the kitchen or home office, use the LED spotlight for warm white light. It concentrates the light at one point.

2. Wherever you want stylish lighting, e.g. in ceilings, walls, furniture…  use the LED spotlight RGBW. It offers a diffuse light which is spread across the room.

Here’s an example floor plan. We positioned the warm white LED spotlights (marked in yellow) in the kitchen and the RGBW LED spotlights (marked in red) for colored and ambient lighting in the living area.

How many spotlights do I need? How much space should be between them?

Measure your space and keep in mind the following lighting rule:

The beam of light of the warm white LED spots should always overlap the next beam of light by a third. The diagram below assuming a room height of about 98” and a space between the LED spots of 59” to get the perfect illumination with enough light.

To save energy, combine the LED spotlights with the Loxone RGBW 24V Dimmer. 8 LED Spots WW can be operated per channel.

How does it work for colored spotlights, the RGBW LED Spots?

It’s the same: we recommend a space of 59” between the LED spotlights.

In contrast to the warm white spots, the LED Spots RGBW have no directed light cone, but a diffuse light for ambient lighting. It’s perfect in combination with our Loxone RGBW 24V Dimmer. Each dimmer can operate 8 spotlights.

Where should I place LED spotlights if I have a fan?

Avoid any lights inside the running diameter of the fan blades. Keep distance between the downlights and the ceiling fan.
