Measuring energy consumption intelligently
Keeping an eye on energy – smart, automatic, efficient.
Why is it important to measure energy consumption?
If you want to save energy, you need to know where, when and how much you’re using. How much power is currently being drawn from the grid? How much energy is the solar panel system generating? What is the charge level of the battery? Which appliances are drawing how much power? With LOXONE, you can see at a glance where energy is being wasted and how you can use it more efficiently.
How can I measure energy consumption?
Energy takes many different forms within a building. Examples include the electricity, heating, cooling, gas and much more. With LOXONE all forms of energy consumption are recorded. In the following, we will focus on electrical energy consumption.
Direct Measurement
Indirect Measurement via Current Transformers
Reading out measured values via interfaces
Which one is the right one depends on the circumstances.
On the one hand, it is about the local conditions: What is the cabling like? What exactly needs to be measured?
On the other hand, it is about standards, guidelines and legislation: How accurately do the measurements need to be taken? What certification is required?
One example of this is MID certification. This provides a standardised, EU-wide legal framework for billing based on meter readings.
FAQs
How can I monitor my home’s electricity consumption using LOXONE?
That depends on the electricity meter.
Many meters can be read using the Air IR meter interface. You can find a list of supported meters here.
Depending on the region, DSMR P1 meters are also used in newer buildings. If this applies to you, you can here check whether your meter can be read using the P1 Meter Reader Air.
It’s best to ask your meter operator whether and how you can read your meter.
Can my P1 Smart Meter be read using the P1 Meter Reader Air?
You can do that check here. You can find the DSMR P1 version of your meter in the data sheet or, often, on the meter itself.
Can my smart meter be read via the Air IR meter interface?
You can find a list of supported meters here.
Can I measure the electricity consumption of household appliances?
Yes. With our smart socket, the Smart Socket Air, you can measure the energy consumption of individual devices and switch them on and off automatically or via an app.
How do I measure the power consumption of large appliances, such as a heat pump?
The electricity consumption of larger appliances, such as heat pumps, industrial machinery or a Wallbox it can either be measured using a dedicated meter or read via various interfaces. It is best to ask the manufacturer or the technician who commissioned the device which method is most appropriate.
I have an old electricity meter. Can I integrate it into LOXONE?
In many cases, even older electricity meters can be integrated into LOXONE. This can be done, for example, using the Air IR meter interface. You can find a list of supported meters here.
If the existing meter cannot be integrated, the metering system can be retrofitted using current transformers and a suitable meter without any modifications to the wiring.
