Smart Home on the South Coast

Challenge

In this new-build project, we had the opportunity to integrate a smart home system from the ground up.

The client was planning to build a modern home and wanted a variety of smart home features. These included automatic lighting throughout the house and garden, a fully zoned heating system with underfloor heating on the first floor and radiators upstairs, automatic shading and ventilation and a complete security system. Access control, EV charging systems and the integration of electric roller shutters were also requested. Another challenge was to also control the main gate - both for their own and the neighboring property. Finally, the entire system needed to be accessible from anywhere and send notifications when the security system is triggered.

A particular concern of the customer was that, despite the lack of a Loxone system at the neighbor's property, a solution had to be found to control the main gate as well.

Solution

The client visited the Loxone UK showroom and decided to control the lighting on the first floor with Loxone, including colored downlights and an alarm function where all lights flash red. In the garden, pergolas, paths and security lighting with motion detection were installed. An underfloor heating distributor was used for the heating on the first floor and radiators on the upper floor.

33 blinds from Qmotion were automatically integrated into the system and now control the lighting and heating. A Ventaxia MVHR system automatically regulates the ventilation based on the humidity.

The security system allows only the lower area to be secured at night, while the garage is alerted if there is no movement after 2 hours. Electric roller garage doors are controlled by Loxone Nano I/O Air modules.

The customer and their neighbor can operate the main gate via the app or Loxone keypads, with notifications if the gate is still open at 11pm. The Loxone wallbox charges the electric vehicles during Octopus Energy's low tariff period. The system can be controlled both locally and remotely via the Loxone app.

After much research and deliberation into the various smart home systems we settled upon Loxone along with QMotion blinds. We felt that the cost of the product was reasonable and the quality very high.

The installation phase went very smoothly with the integrators and electrical contractors collaborating very well. We can’t fault Alpha Touch or Adrian who has been a pleasure to deal with and has a very good knowledge of the products and software. We felt from the start that we could trust them completely and they have not let us down.

Now that the project is complete we remain very happy with the design and functionality as well as the hardware.

We love the smart home system and it does everything that we hoped it would.

If we were going to build again I would go back to Alpha Touch and would have no hesitation in recommending them to anybody else.
