Sesselalpe in Tiefenbach

Due to its location and existing electrical infrastructure, the Sesselalpe in Oberstdorf places particular demands on its energy supply. At the same time, numerous electrical and technical devices must be operated reliably.

The challenge lies not only in providing sufficient electrical power, but also in intelligently distributing and utilizing the available energy. Operating several high-power devices simultaneously can quickly lead to high peak loads, pushing the available power supply to its limits.

A conventional electrical installation quickly reaches its limits in such a scenario: While the individual systems function independently, they do not automatically take into account the overall energy demand and availability across the entire building.

To utilize the available energy as efficiently as possible, a comprehensive energy management system based on LOXONE was implemented at the Sesselalpe.

At the heart of the energy supply is a high-performance photovoltaic system with a large battery storage unit. The generated solar power is used directly whenever possible, and any excess energy is stored. If there is additional PV surplus available, a total of 18 kW of auxiliary heating elements are used. These utilize the excess energy to support the pellet heating system and contribute to optimizing the energy yield of the PV system.

Two wallboxes are also available. Their power consumption is also integrated into the energy management system. The charging power can be adjusted according to the currently available energy, so that vehicles can be charged with self-generated PV power whenever possible, without unnecessarily burdening the overall electrical load.

Decentralized intelligence in every holiday apartment

A special feature of the system is its decentralized structure: Each holiday apartment has its own LOXONE Miniserver. The common areas of the Sesselalpe and the owner's apartment are also each equipped with their own Miniserver.

This allows the individual areas to be controlled independently and simultaneously integrated into the overall energy management system.

Especially in the owner's apartment, the available power is intelligently managed. During periods of high electrical load, non-essential appliances are automatically throttled back or prioritized accordingly. This prevents, for example, multiple high-power appliances from simultaneously exhausting the already limited available power supply.
