You’ve planned it. You’ve wired it. Now comes the moment that decides how your customer will remember the whole project: commissioning. This is where your LOXONE project comes to life, and five things make the difference.

01Commission in stages

In a perfect world, everything would be commissioned at once, but a building site doesn’t wait for the final handover. It needs light, access and other basic functions long before the last wall is painted. So bring some basic functions to life first to support the construction work:

  • Basic lighting: Set up basic lighting so the work lights can go away.
  • Smart access: Install an NFC Code Touch at the main door, even if it’s only temporary, and give the other trades their own access codes, so nobody needs to hand out keys.
  • Alarm off for now: Keep functions like the alarm switched off. A false alarm on day one helps no one.

No network, no commissioning. One thing has to be there before you start: a network. At least a local network, ideally with an internet connection. It sounds obvious, but it’s often missing on site, and without it, commissioning simply stalls.

02Check first, then configure

Before you do any configuration, make sure every device is installed correctly. The color logic makes wiring and connecting the devices as easy as it can be. If you need a refresher, take another look at Wiring Essentials.

How do you proceed? Connect the cables in the distribution board, connect the devices, power them up, and then look at the status LEDs. Red, orange or green: at a glance, you see whether a device is working or not. It’s one of the most useful features you have, so use it on every single device.

Expert tip: If you don’t have a distribution board ready at that time, use your demo case to go room by room, connect the Tree Cable and check the devices.

One of the most common mistakes looks like this: everything gets wired, the walls and ceilings get closed, and only at the very end does someone notice that nothing works. Now every fix means opening things up again. So check each device as soon as it’s mounted, while everything is still accessible.

The second classic is harder to spot: two temperature sensors swapped between rooms. Nothing shows up as an error. The heating just never quite settles, and in one real project, the sensors stayed swapped for four years.

Swapped sensors: no error message, but wrong values

Software can’t fix hardware. No logic in the world can make up for a device in the wrong place. So check first, then configure.

03Pair and name devices consistently

Labeling is one of the biggest problems in the field, and it starts the moment you pair a device. Select it, and it identifies itself: it blinks, pulses or clicks. Now give it a name, a room and, for some products, an installation location. Room and category matter most, because that’s what the Auto Configuration builds on.

Assign name, room and category right when pairing

A few simple rules make names clear for everyone:

  • Name devices by where they are, not by what they are: “Balcony door” tells you something, “Touch” doesn’t.
  • Use compass directions instead of left and right: “Window south” is clear from anywhere in the room.
  • Number spots in a simple grid, like 1.1, 1.2, 1.3.
  • Include where hidden devices are installed, for example a Nano 2 Relay in the ceiling. Someone on site will thank you during remote support.

Finally, separate the technical name you work with from the name your customer sees in the app. You get clarity for service and support, and your customer gets names that make sense in everyday life.

04Test against what you agreed

Testing happens on two levels.

First, every device: Does it measure what it should, and does it do what it should? What does the water level sensor actually report? The Live View in LOXONE Config helps a lot here, because you see the values change in real time. Don’t forget to document what you’ve tested.

Then, every function: Testing doesn’t mean checking whether something works. It means checking whether exactly what you agreed with your customer works. Go through the function list from the consultation step by step, including central functions and special cases.

If it was promised, it gets tested.

05Fine-tune together with your customer

Personal settings like lighting moods belong in a dedicated appointment with your customer. Set them up together, and let your customer try things out. This is also the moment to create a wow effect, like watching every light in the house switch on at once.

Bigger adjustments can wait until your customer has used the building for a while. We recommend scheduling an additional appointment once your customer has been using the installation for about a month.

06Why it pays off

Why put so much care into commissioning? Because it pays you back twice.

First, it does the work for you. When every device is paired, named and assigned to the right room, the LOXONE Auto Configuration creates lighting, shading and climate automatically. Hours of configuring become minutes, and the cleaner your commissioning, the better the result.

Auto Configuration complete: once all devices are paired, named and assigned, hours of configuration become minutes

Second, it makes support easy, even when you’re not on site. With clear names and locations, you know exactly which device you’re looking at, and you can tell anyone on site precisely where to look.

Commissioning isn’t the last step. It’s the foundation for everything that follows.

SummaryChecklist

  • ☐  Commissioned in stages, with basic functions for the building site?
  • ☐  Hardware checked first, then configured?
  • ☐  Devices paired and named consistently?
  • ☐  Tested against what you agreed?
  • ☐  Fine-tuned together with your customer?

Do this, and commissioning stops being the stressful last step. It becomes the moment your customer sees what they’ve invested in. Because a project is only finished when your customer understands it.
