Challenge
A modern single-family home in Mörigen was to be equipped with a future-proof smart home system that not only increases comfort and security, but also focuses on energy efficiency and intuitive control. The multitude of functions, from lighting to audio to access, should work together seamlessly and be centrally controlled.
Solution
In this project, the entire home control system was implemented using the Loxone Smart Home System.
Lighting:
The lighting was fully controlled using the Loxone DALI Extension. This enables precise, percent-accurate dimming without flickering and with a pleasant dimming behavior. Control is via Loxone buttons such as the Touch Tree and the Touch Pure Flex. These multifunctional controls allow for the control of lighting scenes, vertical blinds, music (volume, channel selection, stop), and the complete shutdown of the room with a double click. The buttons also measure temperature and humidity. These values are used both for visualization in the app and for intelligent room control. Presence sensors in areas such as the hallway reliably detect whether someone is in the room and enable intelligent switching of the lights. They also serve as the basis for logical connections, such as heating timers when someone is present.
Shading:
The shading was fully automatically integrated into the Loxone system. In combination with the intelligent room control system, the weather server, and the weather station, the shading automatically adapts to the current weather conditions and the position of the sun, especially when the home is unoccupied. This prevents overheating in the summer and uses solar radiation to save heating energy in the winter. The automatic system can be manually deactivated or adjusted when the home is occupied. Storm and frost protection have also been integrated to protect awnings from strong winds or frost. The awnings retract automatically when it rains.
Audio:
The audio system was implemented using Loxone Master/Client technology. A master speaker was installed in each audio zone, which was expanded with client speakers. This saves resources and installation effort. The speakers support Bluetooth, Spotify, AirPlay, and internet radio. The speakers can also play doorbell tones (via the intercom), custom announcements such as "Dinner is ready," and alarm system alerts. A full-fledged home theater was also installed, featuring high-quality Quadral speakers, a subwoofer, and a Denon receiver, creating a cinema-like experience similar to that found in public cinemas.
Energy:
The Loxone app visualizes the entire energy flow: PV production, battery storage, grid connection, and current consumption. Intelligent logic allows energy flow to be optimized, for example, through intelligent load management, which controls consumers based on power availability.
Access:
The access system is based on the Loxone Intercom and NFC Code Touch. The doorbell can be rung via the intercom. The ringtone is played through the audio speakers, and a notification is simultaneously sent to the Loxone app. The user can speak to visitors via the app and, for example, open the front door or garage door. After 8:00 PM, no acoustic signal is played; instead, the light flashes briefly as the doorbell tone. This way, you'll know that someone has rung the doorbell even at night and won't be bothered by the ringtone. The NFC Code Touch allows you to open the doors with an NFC tag, a defined code, or via the app. Lost tags can be blocked at any time, codes can be changed, or temporarily unlocked – e.g., for cleaning staff.
Air Conditioning (Heating & Cooling):
The heating and cooling system was implemented entirely via Loxone. Eco and comfort times have been defined for winter operation, which control individual room temperature settings based on setpoint temperatures. The "House in Deep Sleep" operating mode deactivates the heating during extended absences (e.g., vacations) and automatically activates it upon return. In summer, free cooling is used to support room cooling, while the actual cooling is provided by integrated indoor air conditioning units. These switch on and off automatically based on the setpoints. Manual intervention remains possible at any time. When a window is open, the air conditioning is automatically deactivated. The app provides temperature statistics, which, for example, show temperature trends over a month. The air conditioning systems were implemented using Loxone Modbus Air and the Haier template created by Loxone.
Alarm system:
The alarm system was implemented using Loxone to the highest standards. All windows are monitored, and the property is video monitored. In the event of an alarm, a comprehensive response is initiated: All Loxone buttons click, the lights flash, a loud alarm tone plays over the speakers, and notifications are sent via the app, the Loxone Caller Service, and email. In addition, the Loxone Tree Siren emits an audible and visual warning signal, and the blinds are raised. Alarm acknowledgement is securely handled via the Loxone app with additional visual encryption.
Additional features:
Touch Pure Flex buttons were used in the living room and kitchen areas, which control, for example, the high-quality SwissFineLine windows. The windows can be easily opened halfway, in the gap ventilation position, or fully opened and closed. A central iPad was installed as a control center with quick access to favorites and intercom functionality. There are also the Velux roof windows, which are also integrated with Loxone and close automatically when it rains. The system is modularly expandable – for example, with pool control, ventilation, or automatic garden irrigation. The complete integration of all systems – lighting, audio, climate, energy, security, and access – creates a networked, future-proof home that can be conveniently controlled via app or automatically and operates with worldwide access via an existing internet connection.
