Rail Depot Power Outlets

Challenge

The project involved the installation of a load-controlled power outlet system within a railway depot in North London. The electrical distribution and control equipment was located across separate areas of the depot, with control panels positioned at each end of the site.

A key requirement was to create a reliable method for the two control panels to communicate with each other, allowing the overall system to operate as one coordinated installation rather than as two isolated control systems.

Alongside the control functionality, the client also required visibility of the electrical health of the installation. This included monitoring energy usage and providing supervision of important protective equipment such as the surge protection devices, helping make the condition of the system easier to assess during operation and maintenance.

Solution

LOXONE was used as the central automation and monitoring platform for the installation.

The control panels positioned at opposite ends of the depot were linked through LOXONE, allowing information and control states to be exchanged between them. This provided a practical method of coordinating the load-controlled power outlet system across the site without relying on completely independent control arrangements at each end of the building.

LOXONE was also used to provide system-health monitoring. Energy monitoring was incorporated to give greater visibility of electrical consumption, while the condition of the surge protection equipment could also be monitored through the control system.

Bringing the communication, control and monitoring functions together within LOXONE created a single coordinated platform that could supervise the installation while also providing useful operational information for those responsible for maintaining the depot.

LOXONE gave us a straightforward way of combining the control and monitoring requirements of the project. Being able to communicate between panels at opposite ends of the depot while also monitoring energy and system health made it a very good fit for the application.
