Iveco Daily Fulltimer Van

Challenge

The goal of this project was to create a fully automated, energy-efficient and safe control system for a custom-built camper van. The main challenge was integrating lighting, safety, energy monitoring and comfort functions within a highly compact and mobile environment, ensuring stable operation even in off-grid conditions. Another key requirement was minimizing cabling due to limited space and variable installation constraints typical of a vehicle.

Solution

The automation system is based on a LOXONE Miniserver Compact paired with a Relay Extension. All access points of the van were equipped with dedicated door and window contact sensors.
Water Sensors were positioned in critical technical areas to detect flooding risks early.

A LOXONE Nano IO was installed in the driver’s cabin and interfaced with the van’s body computer to read the factory door-status signals and to interact with the central locking system and the vehicle’s horn. This enables seamless integration of the van’s native automotive functions into the LOXONE ecosystem, further expanding security and control capabilities.

The use of LOXONE Air technology played a crucial role in this project. Thanks to its wireless interface, it significantly reduced the need for complex cabling and allowed the installation of devices in locations where wired connections would have been impractical or impossible. This made it ideal for the limited and irregular spaces inside a camper van. Two Touch Air units and a Touch Pure Flex provide intuitive and flexible control across the living area, allowing full control of the entire van from anywhere inside.

Interior lighting is managed through a LOXONE RGBW Dimmer, while fancy addressable LED strips with cool effects are controlled via an ESP32 running WLED.

Intrusion, fire and flood alarms are fully integrated into the automation logic, ensuring comprehensive and intelligent safety management.

Resources management was further enhanced by integrating the Victron Energy ecosystem via Modbus TCP, enabling real-time monitoring of the battery bank, tanks, inverter/charger, solar charging system and overall power flow directly within the LOXONE interface.

I chose LOXONE because it brings lighting, safety, energy management and monitoring into one unified and flexible platform.
The system has proven extremely reliable not only in this project, but also in other similar mobile and off-grid applications.
Thanks to this stability and openness, the final user can enjoy a fully simplified and comprehensive control experience over their entire vehicle.
Moreover, the system is easily expandable in the future should any upgrades or additional features be required, ensuring a professional, robust and future-proof smart-van solution.
