SD Card

The SD Card is a crucial component of the Loxone Miniserver, the heart of every Loxone Smart Building. It stores the Miniser's operating system, configuration, and program data, making it essential to address any SD Card issues promptly.

Only use Loxone SD Cards. These industrial-grade cards have been extensively tested to ensure reliable operation and full functionality. Loxone provides SD Cards for the Miniserver, Audioserver, Intercom, and Master Speaker.

The SD Card is formatted on a PC or notebook using the Loxone Config software. Insert the card into the computer card reader or use a USB card reader. Formatting the SD card will reset the device to its factory default settings. It can also be used to restore a previously created backup or reset the system password.

SD Card Backup

The SD Card backup feature creates a copy of all files currently on the SD Card. These backups can be saved to your computer and stored on any device you choose.

First, ensure that the SD Card is selected in the periphery. Then, under the SD Card tab on the top ribbon, click on "System Backup".
If you are using a Gateway/Client system, all SD Cards will be backed up.

In the SD Card backup window, you can select which elements to include in the backup. All options are checked by default.

When the backup is complete, a message will appear stating "Backup Completed", and you can close the window.

By default, backups are stored locally on your PC at:
C:\Users\User\Documents\Loxone\Loxone Config\Backups\

Each backup includes the IP address, serial number, the date, and the Config version.

Reset Miniserver to Factory Settings

If you are connected to the Miniserver in Loxone Config, you can reset the SD Card to factory settings by right-clicking on the Miniserver and selecting Reset to factory settings.

In the window that appears, you can choose whether to keep the current network settings.

Once the SD Card has been reset, you can reconnect to the Miniserver.

The default username and password are both "admin".

Formatting the SD Card

Formatting the SD Card from the Miniserver ensures that the device is restored to its original factory settings, including the operating system, configuration, and program data. This could be helpful when the SD Card becomes corrupted, the system behaves unexpectedly, or you want to completely reset the Miniserver before reconfiguring it.

Steps to correctly format the SD Card:

First, switch off the power supply to the Miniserver and remove the microSD card. Insert the card into your computer card reader.

Open Loxone Config and navigate to SD Card or Project Management, then select Format SD Card.

The following window will open:

Select Drive: Choose the drive containing the SD card.
Backup Source: Select a local backup or a backup from Exosphere.
Filter Backups: Use the drop-down to filter backups for specific devices.
Select Backup: Choose the backup to restore. To create a factory SD card, do not select a backup.
Delete Backups: Remove any unwanted backups from your PC.
Device Type: Select the target device (e.g., Miniserver, Miniserver Gen. 1, Audioserver).
Format: Click Format and confirm with Yes.

If the SD Card contains a Loxone file system, a warning will appear.

Choose Overwrite data to create a card with factory settings or restore a backup. Choose Keep data to update only the firmware of the Miniserver.

Remove the SD Card from the computer and insert it into the Miniserver. Ensure the power is off when inserting the card. Turn the power supply back on; the Miniserver will boot from the new SD Card.

Then proceed with the initial setup.

Resetting the Password

From Loxone Config version 12 and higher, it is possible to reset the password using the Miniserver SD Card. Please note that the firmware on the SD card must also be version 12 or higher.

First, switch off the power supply to the Miniserver and remove the microSD card. Insert the card into your computer card reader.

Open Loxone Config and navigate to SD Card or Project Management, then select Reset Password.

A window will open that will guide you through the reset process step by step:

Select the drive that contains the SD Card.

Enter a new password for the user admin.

The new password will be saved to the SD Card and the window can be closed.

Remove the SD card from the computer and place it into the Miniserver. Then turn the power supply back on and the Miniserver will boot. The Miniserver will send a message to all users that the password has been reset.

Now the admin user can log on to the Miniserver using the new password.

SD Card Management

Via Manage SD Card, old files such as statistics and log files that are no longer required can be deleted from the SD card. In general, this is not necessary. Always create a backup before deleting any files using this option.

To access this function, select the SD Card in the Periphery Tree and click Manage SD Card in the ribbon menu.

A window opens listing all files that can be removed. Select the files you want to delete and click on "Delete".

SD Card Diagnostics

The Miniserver automatically checks the SD Card weekly, during each Healthcheck, and after every restart. The test evaluates:
- Read speed
- Write speed
- Read/write errors
- Write load (e.g. statistics and logging)

If an issue is detected, one of the following messages is shown:

MessageDescriptionTroubleshooting Steps
SD Card Write Load HighOccurs when too many statistics are recorded or very short polling cycles (e.g. Every Change) are used. Excessive writing reduces SD Card lifespan.1. Reduce the number of recorded statistics.
2. Increase the polling interval.
3. Use Project Validation in Loxone Config to identify high-write objects.
SD Card DamagedThe SD Card is worn; reliable operation can no longer be guaranteed. Possible causes: low read/write speed, high number of read/write errors.1. Check SD Card usage .
2. Check "Usage" (%) in the output.
3. Delete old data if usage is above 60%.
4. Run the SD test again.
5. If the message remains, replace the SD Card.
SD Card DefectiveImmediate action required. The Miniserver can no longer operate reliably; continued use may lead to system failure. Causes: very low read/write speed, failed SD Card quality test.1. Check SD Card usage .
2. Delete old data if usage exceeds 60%.
3. Run the SD Card test again.
4. If the issue persists, replace the SD Card immediately.
