More Than Just a Control4 Alternative
Control4 is a well-known smart home platform, offering a polished user experience and extensive third-party integrations.
LOXONE takes a different approach: a complete automation ecosystem where hardware, software, and automation logic are developed together – delivering deeper automation, greater flexibility, and a streamlined solution from planning to operation.
Openness
LOXONE
Its automation-first architecture is designed to work across both residential and commercial applications.
Control4
Control4 relies heavily on proprietary hardware, dealer tools, and third-party drivers to expand functionality.
While it supports many integrations, the ecosystem is largely managed through certified dealers and licensed software.
Scalability
LOXONE
From single-family homes to multi-site commercial properties and large multi-dwelling developments, LOXONE is designed to scale without requiring major architectural changes.
Additional Miniservers can be added while maintaining a unified system structure.
Control4
As systems grow, the need for more hardware and dealer involvement can increase complexity and cost.
Intelligence
LOXONE
LOXONE’s centralized Miniserver architecture is built around automation rather than user commands.
Intelligent automation functions coordinate lighting, climate, shading, security, and energy management automatically, reducing the need for constant user interaction.
Control4
Advanced automation typically requires additional programming and ongoing dealer support.
Software & Costs
LOXONE
All software, apps, updates, and remote access are included without licensing fees.
This creates predictable project costs and eliminates recurring charges for system enhancements and maintenance.
Control4
Control4 utilizes licensed dealer software and may involve additional costs for updates, integrations, and advanced features.
Over time, service visits and licensing requirements can increase the total cost of ownership.
Configuration & Visualization
LOXONE
LOXONE Config includes pre-built function blocks that accelerate programming, while the LOXONE App automatically generates a complete visualization of the system without additional setup.
This reduces commissioning time and delivers a consistent user experience on every project.
Control4
Changes to layouts, icons, or functionality often require additional configuration time and professional support.
Support & Maintenance
LOXONE
Automatic updates and centralized system logic simplify long-term maintenance and troubleshooting.
Control4
Maintenance, troubleshooting, and system modifications often require coordination between dealers, manufacturers, and third-party vendors, which can increase support overhead.
Openness
LOXONE
LOXONE offers numerous interfaces for integrating common standards such as KNX, DALI, Modbus, EnOcean and DMX.
In addition, there are certified connections to systems such as Apple HomeKit, Belimo and Bosch.
This allows LOXONE to be flexibly integrated into existing system environments – while maintaining centralized system logic.
KNX
KNX is an open standard that allows components from different manufacturers to be combined.
While this wide selection enables flexible system configurations, it also increases the effort required for integration and coordination during the project.
Scalability
LOXONE
LOXONE systems are fully scalable – from single-family homes to complex commercial projects.
Using the client-gateway architecture, multiple Miniserver can be networked and operated across multiple locations.
KNX
KNX systems are fundamentally scalable, but as project size increases, they require additional infrastructure (e.g., power supplies, line couplers).
This results in increased planning and installation costs.
Intelligence
LOXONE
The Miniserver is the central component of LOXONE home and building automation. It handles all control and automation features.
KNX
The intelligence of a KNX system is distributed across the sensors and actuators.
Software & Costs
LOXONE
All software, including apps, updates and remote access, is available royalty-free. There are no ongoing software costs.
KNX
The ETS software, which requires a license, is required for project planning.
Additional tools and updates may incur further costs.
Configuration & Visualization
LOXONE
Setup is quick and streamlined using LOXONE Config.
Preconfigured function blocks and Auto Config facilitate implementation.
The visualization is generated automatically and is available at no additional cost.
KNX
Project configuration is performed via the ETS and requires manual parameterization.
The use of different manufacturers and components increases the effort required for coordination.
Visualization requires additional programming effort. It also requires additional hardware, which incurs additional costs.
Support & Maintenance
LOXONE
Hardware and software come from a single source.
This reduces the number of interfaces and simplifies support and maintenance.
Centralized logic and automatic updates ensure stable operation.
KNX
Because multiple vendors are involved, support and service processes vary.
In practice, this can lead to greater coordination efforts and longer response times.

Can LOXONE and Control4 be combined?
With more than 250 built-in function blocks, advanced automation logic can be implemented quickly and efficiently. And if you need assistance, LOXONE’s support team and project consultants are available to help throughout the process.
What does the LOXONE functional warranty stand for?
LOXONE developed its Tree and Air technologies with a focus on reducing installation complexity for both residential and commercial projects. Devices are designed to be discovered, configured, and integrated with minimal effort, creating a seamless experience from installation to operation.
Because every component is engineered to work together as part of a unified ecosystem, LOXONE stands behind the performance and reliability of its solutions with a functional warranty for qualified partners.
What happens if the Miniserver fails?
LOXONE hardware and software are designed for continuous operation and long-term reliability. The Miniserver serves as the intelligence behind every installation and has been engineered with durability in mind.
Because it contains no moving parts and operates with very low power consumption, the likelihood of hardware failure is extremely low. If an individual sensor or actuator experiences an issue, the remainder of the system continues operating independently.
Additionally, a LOXONE installation can function without an internet connection. While services such as remote access via the LOXONE App may be unavailable, the core automation features continue to run locally without interruption.
How secure is LOXONE?
Every LOXONE system is protected by the Miniserver’s security mechanisms, ongoing security updates, and general network security (in the hands of the user).
What if LOXONE no longer exists?
LOXONE has established itself as a global leader in automation with a strong international presence and a continuously growing partner network. Here are some facts and figures:
