This smart shop is located in a large shopping centre in Shepherd's Bush, London, and has been designed to maximise sales and minimise costs through intelligent lighting and energy monitoring.

About The Project

Adam Bryan and his brother-in-law have been self-employed on commercial and domestic electrical installations together for ten years and found a passion through Loxone for automation which drove them to set up TAB Installations, a family business specialising in automation .

As one of the fastest growing UK based retailers, Blue Inc caters predominantly for young, fashion-conscious men, although the new flagship store boasts a small womenswear section, too. Founded in 1912 in Stratford, Blue Inc now have over 240 UK stores and 5 stores overseas. Blue Inc incorporate their East London heritage into their menswear and boyswear collections.

A Smarter Shopping Experience

A Tale Of Two Stores

Rising energy costs in the UK meant that creating an energy efficient store was a top priority for Blue Inc HQ. In order to quantify the results of having an automated store, HQ decided to set up two new stores: one automated by Loxone, and the other just a regular 'dumb' shop.

The automated shop was fitted with intelligent lighting, temperature sensors and even an energy meter to ensure that Blue Inc HQ are always in the know, with automatic updates about the shop's energy consumption.

Counting The Savings

A three phase pulse meter was installed to monitor the electricity consumption of the unit. Blue Inc HQ receive an automatic email every quarter to inform them of the usage stats, which they can then compare to the 'dumb' store with no automation.

What A Bright Idea!

The key emphasis for this project was testing the effect of lighting on the customer shopping experience. The lighting throughout the shop is run at 75% brightness, with the ability to highlight different areas of the shop, such as the sale area, at 100% brightness, with the hope of attracting customers to the brighter lit areas and thus driving more sales.

The store makes use of a variety of different lighting set ups to ensure a contrast is created. This was an important aspect of the lighting design, since lighting contrast is key to drawing attention to different areas of the store, and helping offers to really stand out.

Dimmed Lighting Helps Reduce Running Costs

Back Of House

The back of house lighting is triggered by motion sensors - after a set peiod of time with no movement, the lights dim to 50%, and then 25% to help save energy and reduce the store's running costs.

Smart Access Control

A door entry system was installed in the store with an iButton reader to give the team at Blue Inc HQ greater control over access. Each employee is assigned an electronic key fob, or iButton, which is unique to them. Headquarters can then easily see when and to whom access was granted to the back of house store room and office.

A smart access system such as this allows HQ to change access permissions remotely and choose specific time periods when access can be granted. For a sales assistant, this might be an hour before store opening hours until an hour after the store closes. For maintenance and stock replenishing staff, this may be out of normal trading hours only. For part-time staff that only work weekends, access can be restricted further to activate the iButton only at weekends - the staff at Blue Inc HQ have total flexibility.

Feeling The Heat

Other stores within the retail complex had complained about the temperatures being too high in their units, so temperature sensors were installed throughout the store with a mind to installing air conditioning units in future which can be controlled automatically.

PARTNER'S FAVOURITE

The industrial style high bay lights are height adjustuble through lifters, and can be controlled either via the Loxone app on the iPad by the till, or via remote control.

This means that they can be brought down by the shop staff and adjusted depending on which area of the store they want to highlight. If the store layout changes or a promotion finishes, they can be lifted back up again with just the touch of a button.

Partner Quote

"Overall, I am very pleased with what we achieved in the time we had, and how Loxone as a company and product performed. We could not have got it running without the excellent support at Loxone. TAB Installations as a company are now approaching other commerical companies to install this system and look forward to many more installs in the future."
