The automated heating controls work intelligently as well, with our heating only turning on when all windows in that room are fully closed, meaning no heat is lost through open windows. So we never need to worry about throwing our money out of the window again!
The Heating Home
The heating in this 110m2 flat was fully automated with Loxone using retrofit friendly components
About the Project
|NAME:||The Heating Home|
|Location:||St. Stefan, Austria|
We decided to install the Loxone Miniserver in our home to control our heating system. Our house measures a roomy 110m ² but is quite an old building and was extremely inefficient when it came to energy and in particular, heating. Constantly changing the individual temperatures of the rooms in the house was a real chore and it was near impossible to heat any room completely to our liking. Thanks to Loxone we got the issue under control immediately and increased the comfort of our family home tenfold.
Manual readjustment of the heating in our home is now a thing of the past; our heating even does the thinking for us now! Not only is an individual heating control system extremely convenient for us, it also helps us to save quite a lot of money. With the Loxone Mini Server we reduced our annual heating costs by €1000, meaning the entire installation will pay for itself (€2500) in just two and a half years.
A heating system with a voice
Ventilation is essential, especially in older buildings like ours. But when airing out a room it can be easy to allow windows to remain open for longer than is really necessary. And once you have, you'll soon notice the drop in temperature inside your home. We know we certainly did. Sensors detect when the room temperature drops below 15°C and if the window is still open or if it's after dusk the Loxone Caller Service alerts us. It's remarkable just how much time, effort, energy and heating costs we've saved already.

Ventilation is essential, especially in older buildings like ours. But when airing out a room it can be easy to allow windows to remain open for longer than is really necessary. And once you have, you'll soon notice the drop in temperature inside your home. We know we certainly did. Sensors detect when the room temperature drops below 59°F and if the window is still open or if it's after dusk the Loxone Caller Service alerts us. It's remarkable just how much time, effort, energy and heating costs we've saved already.
Our heating is now fully frost protected. If the temperature inside our property was to drop below 5°C in any room for whatever reason and we were away - on a winter holiday, for instance (and we'd accidentally left a window open) - Loxone can help save the day. Heat sensors would detect the drop in temperature and instruct the radiators in that particular area in the house to come on, preventing frost and the expensive damage that can be caused by it.
Heating system works night shifts
Because me and my girlfriend work different shift patterns (she's a nurse and often works nights), we've made sure our heating works shifts too. As I leave for work, she's often coming home. With a regular heating schedule, the house would begin to get cold as she returns. To make sure she doesn't get frostbite after a hard night shift at the hospital, we can easily add an extension to the exisiting program - our very own 'night shift' mode, enabled from the iPhone app on the way home.
Room by room - right temperature
We don't want every room in our home to be the same temperature. Personally, we prefer the bathoom to always be slightly warmer than the other rooms. We programme our bedroom to always be at 18°C - a temperature that we feel ideal for sleeping. In the kitchen and living room we opt for 21 or 22°C. These little alterations may sound trivial but they really can make all the difference when it comes to creating a truly comfortable home environment.
Low battery reminder
The 'actuators' on our radiators are battery operated. When the batteries begin to run low, we receive an email alert automatically so that we can replace them and avoid any potential heating failure. These notifications are usually only about once a year and are a great little feature which means there's even less for us to have to think about.
Heating program for each day and shift
We've adjusted the heating entirely to our own individual needs as a household. Weekdays, holidays, weekends - it's so simple to programme, we can easily ensure that our home is only ever heated when we're actually in it.
Heating system weekend mode
Our daily routines aren't always the same. As with everyone, weekends and holidays see to that (thankfully!). Because of this, we've designed and implemented our very own holiday and weekend set-up. Now we can guarantee a comfortable room temperature, as previously programmed by us, at all times - regardless of the day.
Getting ready for work
We've used the Loxone Miniserver to programme our heating quite specifically so that only rooms we know we'll actually be using will be brought to our required temperatures. On weekday mornings, for example, only the kitchen and bathroom are brought to our desired temperature. And early on Friday afternoon the rest of the house is heated in preparation for the weekend.
Holiday: Flat in hibernation mode
With a single touch on the Loxone application on our iPad, we're able to fully control our heating. We can put our heating into holiday mode remotely or just before we leave to spend a spell away from home. The brilliant thing about this is that it enables us to fully restore the heating to normal operation just before our return so we never know the difference!
Coming home early or late
Every now and again, circumstances dictate that we have to head home early or late - just like everyone else. And when we do, we don't want to arrive back to a cold house (or to think that we've been paying to heat an empty place in our absence). This is where the remote access capability of the Miniserver proves invaluable. A brief alteration to the schedule on an iPhone or iPad and you can tinker with the program to suit precisely your needs. From wherever you are. It's quick, simple and a real money saver.
Heating with a personal touch
Let's be honest, there are plenty of days during a British winter when we all need to ramp up the heating at home. Well, if we're being entirely honest, there are plenty of days like that during a British summer too! A quick swipe on your iPhone or iPad and you can tweak the temperature inside to exactly to your liking. This can be especially useful for anyone with mobility issues looking to avoid unnecessary trips to individual radiators/heaters.
Party hard heat smart
Have you ever noticed how warm your place can get when you host a get together or party? We certainly used to. But not anymore. We've set up a 'party' mode that we override the normal settings with when we have friends around now. The rooms where our friends and family will be (usually the living room and kitchen) drop to 17°C and we just let the body heat of our guests do the rest... Now that's clever!

About the Install
We managed to set up the Loxone system in its entirety in just two hours. The hardware was even easier and we had that up and running in less than an hour. Perhaps the only slight struggle we faced was getting the router supplied to us by our internet provider connected to the net and functioning fully - a job which took us eight hours to complete...
